Why did you choose the Whitsundays: We primarily chose the Whitsundays because of the great weather at the time of year we were getting married – May. We wanted warm sunshine – we live in Sydney so the heat’s not an issue for us but our families were travelling from the UK so we wanted then to have a great couple of weeks’ weather but also not too hot that it would be uncomfortable for them! We also knew that for most of our families they would probably not have the opportunity to visit The Great Barrier Reef again and this was a huge attraction for experiences we could all see and do together. The reviews around The Whitsundays, particularly Airlie Beach, were all so popular and the images available on-line spectacular.
What was the best thing about having a destination wedding: The best thing about a destination wedding is it all becomes so much more than the wedding. It’s a holiday, family and friends’ time and a wedding all rolled into one. Everyone being away from home and able to totally relax makes it a brilliant way to extend celebrations.
Did your wedding have a theme or a particular style: The wedding theme was very simple, we didn’t want the stunning location to be overshadowed by too much décor and styling. Since we are originally from the UK we themed the wedding as ‘an English country garden’. This theme just helped to choose flowers and colours. Beautiful cream and white roses, blue hyacinths and all blue ‘finishing touches’ from the chair sashes to the table décor, beautiful napkin ribbons and tied favour boxes. This theme also matched the wedding dress, very classic and lace so this was also picked up in the bouquet and table runners. Being English we also knew everybody would be in their ‘best dress’ and they didn’t let us down……including wonderful hats and fascinators.
What’s your best advice for other brides / grooms: Firstly, get a wedding planner! The stress levels were minimal and everything was taken care of, we honestly only ever had choices to make with somebody else doing all the research and hard work. People could not believe how relaxed we were, even on the day and we put this totally down to having had all the ‘hassle’ taken away from us. Secondly, enjoy every single second of the day; it goes so, so quickly.
Anything else you’d like to say about your special day: Trust your suppliers and if you have one a wedding planner implicitly – this is their day job and they really do know what they’re doing. Having a photographer that you gel with is so important and they will produce magical photos that capture the whole atmosphere of the day.
